Dr. Romaine (Research),
Comerford (Extension), Dr. Jaenicke (Teaching)
C. Peter Romaine.
Dr. Romaine’s research program has followed a very focused approach
of examining the viral and fungal pathologies of edible mushrooms at the
organismal and molecular levels. He has applied molecular tools to answer
questions that help growers manage the production threat from La France,
green mold and Verticillium diseases. His research focuses on a species
of major economic importance (especially to Pennsylvania, which accounts
for 59% of total U.S. mushroom production valued at over $880 million).
Due to the quality and considerable productivity of Dr. Romaine’s
research program, he has emerged as a highly renowned scientist and internationally
respected authority on mycoviruses. He is currently working on the rapid
production of vaccines and other therapeutic proteins in altered mushrooms
that would provide commercial spawn makers with a new dimension of mushroom
products having market values far exceeding that of the conventional food
end usage. Dr. Romaine is internationally recognized for his practical
contributions in the field of plant pathology and mushroom science.
